Busy January

The year 2016 started with full speed. Our friends went back to Australia, I travelled to Finland for work and Grandma came to help out at home while I was gone.

Finland was very, very cold, the coldest day it was 25 below zero and coming from 35 plus was quite a shock for the body. When it began to warm up, a snowstorm arrived, so I really got to experience winter.

Meanwhile in South Africa, little I started grade 0 at Dainfern College. She loves school but not the uniform she needs to wear as she really is a dress-loving girl.

Back in SA, I went with Grandma to work at Tokozani preschool in Diepsloot one morning. The classrooms were crowded but the main purpose is to keep the children away and safe from the street, while parents are at work.

Last week, I went back to Diepsloot Combined School to help teach English to a new batch of third graders. There were 66 children in the class, with one ordinary teacher! Surprisingly enough, they were all silent when we arrived.

Now we have one year to improve their English so that they are better prepared to manage school, which will be in English from now. Many did not know the alphabet yet….

Christmas in Kruger and the Elephant coast

As you all know by now, we love camping in the wilderness. So, when our friends from Australia arrived before Christmas, naturally we rented two camping cars and headed out in the bush.

First we stayed four nights in Kruger-park where it was quite hot, 42 degrees Celsius. Then one night in Pongola and finally four nights on the Elephant coast, which is the coast just south of Mozambique along the warm Indian ocean. We had a fabulous trip, here are some pictures.

Hippos bathing in Kruger park.

This hyena came outside our camp in Balule both nights we stayed there.
We were so happy to be inside the fence!

Don't touch my dinner!

These lions had killed a buffalo in the morning and eaten so much they were panting.

Card games in Mabibi on Christmas eve.

Breakfast preparations on the gas stove.
